Comic books are as much mythology as they are fine art. Growing up, most children had to only walk into their neighborhood candy store and with a relatively small amount of money to find adventure in every beautiful illustration and dynamic storyline. Not all artwork nor literature has been as accessible. Just as magical as the accessibility of these wondrous pieces of art were how they made (and continue to make) their audiences feel. And with the creation of characters like The Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, The Falcon, Blade and War Machine many children and adults also found images that directly mirrored, represented and inspired them.

We need not have been working class and poor families growing up in New York City to relate to the escapades of Harlem's Luke Cage or The Falcon, but to those of us who were (and are) it is invaluable to see ourselves as heroes too. We aspired to rule kingdoms and soar through the skies like Black Panther and Storm because on paper we could. We even had a voracious beast slayer in Blade and a knight in shining armor in War Machine.

The artists who have helped to tell the stories of these characters have created truly amazing and often underrated art. Their technique, precision and dedication is astonishing. As you move throughout the exhibit, please note the diversity in the interpretation of each character from artist to artist and generation to generation. Each style is distinctive in nature, stroke and design.

It is our honor to bring this show to you so that you too may enjoy the diversity of these legendary characters via the amazing work of these talented artists. Our company name, Somos Arte, means "we are art", and we are not only a creative services studio that provides branding, campaigns, commercial photography and shows for our clients; but we also celebrate art in all its forms and invite you to celebrate with us. Welcome to our second show in this genre and it is our hope that you leave as enthused and awed as we have been in developing the show for you to enjoy.

The play incredibly interweaves some Black history (not just the Airmen) into the story. One of the next steps we discussed is buying out the whole theater on one given night. The idea will be to have an adult bring at least one youth that is 21 or younger to see the play. If we get the logistics worked out, I will post another follow-up blog entry.

Filmmaker George Lucas describes For Love of Liberty as "a long-overdue document celebrating, commemorating, and at long last, acknowledging the heroic efforts of our country's African-American soldiers," while award-winning documentarian Ken Burns says, "I believe this is a story - both entertaining and educational - that is relevant to all Americans." The film has received support from Congressman Charles Rangel, Senator John McCain, Senator Carl Levin, many major veterans organizations and all branches of the United States military.

Layon Gray's historical drama Black Angels Over Tuskegee will make its Off-Broadway premiere at St. Luke's Theatre, 308 West 46th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues), beginning performances Friday, January 29th, with Opening Night set for February 15th. Based on true events, six men explore their collective struggle with Jim Crow, their intelligence, patriotism, dreams of an inclusive fair society, and brotherhood as they become the first African American fighter pilots in the U.S. Army Air Forces. Black Angels Over Tuskegee goes beyond the headlines of the popular stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and exposes the men who exhibited the courage to excel in spite of all the overwhelming odds against them.

Rejoice y'all! On the FUN side, I'm happy to announce that Warner Bros just released (January 12th, 2010) the Urban Action Collection on DVD which is part of their 4 Film Favorites series of DVDs.

This particular set of films feature: Belt Black Jones (1974) , Hot Potato (1976), and Three The Hard Way (1974) all star my childhood Black (martial arts) hero Jim Kelly; the other film Black Samson (1974), which I never heard of, is also featured. You can pick up this 4 film set DVD for like $13 to $15 duckets at Amazon.com. A bargain. And the films are remastered and letterboxed. ( I HATE the term widescreen; I'm old school from the laserdisc days! Yo' heard!)

Anyway, not gonna type much more here other than to say that Black Belt Jones and Three The Hard Way are winners. Hot Potato unfortunately is not a good film. In fact, it's rather horrendous and wasn't funny! The following pics are from Black Belt Jones, which a campy FUN film. I also found and embedded below the opening film fight sequence and the ending film fight sequence from YouTube.

So, chill a while on Nubian Knights Network and watch a few minutes and have FUN.
