QUOTATIONS OF "BLACK"

"Whenever I use BLACK it relates to some history of Africans in that particular place. It’s the idea of the color BLACK as a metaphor, or as a representation of African-Americans. It’s the notion of BLACK- BLACKNESS - and all its other meanings in relation to the history of race..."

- Fred Wilson

"Most of my fortitude to continue doing the work comes from the moral outrage I feel about the injustices that Black people endure disproportionately daily."

- N. Abdul-Wakil

"In the end, what matters is not skin shade but pan-African consciousness. Loving your complexion, your nose, lips, hair length and texture, no matter what the politics or trends decide, and simply be. That's the problem with us (African folks). We're still learning how to love ourselves. So used to glorifying others and putting others first..."

Nhojj Offers New "My Brother" Music Video
As A Gift of Gratitude

Official Website: Nhojj Café - nhojj.com

Nhojj Offers New "My Brother" Music Video as A Gift of Gratitude

With a little help from friends, Nhojj releases "My Brother" - a simple heart felt music video that reaches toward the joy of true friendship - offering thanks to those who helped shape and mold him.

In contrast to his controversial gay marriage "Amazing Grace" video, Nhojj turns his focus to the simple value of friendship with his collaborative "My Brother" released 8/12/12 on YouTube.  At the heart of both music videos lies the gift of affirmation and the celebration of love.

Taken from Nhojj's critically acclaimed 2008 "Soul Comfort" album, "My Brother" features a diverse array of male artists:  poets sean360x and Baron, his classical trained brother Sam Martinborough, Gospel vocals from ButtaFlySoul and Jesse O's R&B stylings.   "My Brother" was released as a single with 2 additional Soul House remixes in August 2011 and is now Nhojj's 3rd music video.

Nhojj writes in his liner notes, "With this song I strive to go beyond the contradictions and disappointments and reach for the good times, the fond memories, the moments of strength and courage. With this song I offer thanks to the fathers... friends... brothers... lovers... sons who helped me be the man I am today."  In this fast paced and highly competitive world where simple values are often ignored or forgotten, "My Brother" seeks to be a reminder of the meaning of brotherhood and friendship.  It shows 5 black males supporting and affirming one another, with special emphasis on the good times and happiness that can result from positive male relationships.

"The goal of this music video is to show the possibilities that can exist in the realms of friendship between men, and to remind viewers to cherish these special moments.  I hope it provides a warm feeling and sends waves of love to the viewer because love is healing," Nhojj explains.

Performing in the "My Brother" video is writer, director and #1 Reverbnation artist sean360x.  Recipient of the Jacob A. Wieser Writing Award, his work has been featured in the International Fringe Festival - the largest multi-cultural arts festival in North America.  The Voice of Harlem (WHCR 90.3FM) says "His eccentric style, energetic live performances, and conceptual music dazzle critics and audiences alike." Nhojj says  "I'm always in awe of the energy and creative spirit of sean360x.  In the beginning, his company uni aum Entertainment really provided a home for me to grow and develop artistically.  I know I wouldn't be the artist I am without sean360x."

Another member of the "My Brother" ensemble is Def Jam Poet ButtaFlySoul.  "Before I started writing 'Soul Comfort' ButtaFlySoul sat me down and shared some wisdom - he spoke to my mission here on earth and challenged me to reach deeper into my Spirit.  I will never forget that night - he really awakened something special within me." ButtaFlySoul is a writer, director, actor, recording artist, emcee and activist.  He has opened for Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, and Ledisi and toured with Grammy nominated poet Nikki Giovanni in the BET sponsored "Totally You Tour."

Baron is an OUTMusic Award winning electro/hip-hop recording artist and his music has been featured in films like "Finding Me" and "Blueprint."  He met Nhojj in 2003 during the live video taping of "An Intimate Evening with Nhojj," directed by Emmy nominated Bill Cote and they became quick friends. "Baron inspires me because he is always reaching higher, pushing further, and becoming more of who he is.  I've always admired artists who aren't afraid to explore the musical terrain and evolve - I love his new EP "RadioHeart" and I am indebted to him because he connected me with the music supervisor for "Blueprint" and suggested I submit "Love" to be included in the film's soundtrack and the rest, as they say, is history."  Nhojj's music video for the song "Love" climbed to #1 on MTV Music.

The final "My Brother" cast member is Nhojj's brother Sam Martinborough - founder of Mssng Lnks, a Boston based non-profit organization focused on helping aspiring teenage vocalists pursue their dreams, get into college and stay there.  Mssng Lnks provides the financial, logistical, emotional support they need as they pursue vocal or musical training.  "What can I say about my brother… he was the first family member I came out to and he has always been someone I could talk to and whose support I could depend on.  He personifies everything this song and music video means - he is the inspiration" Nhojj reveals.

"My Brother" was filmed at Studio 80 and JW Recording studios where Nhojj recorded most of the song's vocals.  Nhojj explains, "The recording booth in the music video is the actual booth where I recorded my vocals for "My Brother" so it was great to be able to capture this moment on film with all these men who I admire and love.  Even my co-producer Jon Evans was there behind the mixing board.  The only person that was missing was Jesse O, because of his hectic study schedule.  He wasn't available to film, but we had his support and love, and it is this same support and love we hope to pass along to everyone who watches "My Brother."

NAKO-NY Presents A Community Forum For
The New York State Freedom Party
With Councilman Charles Barron
Sunday, Oct. 17th, 2010 / 3PM - 6PM

NEW YORK CHAPTER
of the
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of KAWAIDA ORGANIZATIONS

On Sunday, October 17th, 2010 the New York Chapter of the National Association of Kawaida Organizations (NAKO) presents a community forum with the New York Freedom Party.

On Monday, June 14th, 2010, New York City Councilman Charles Barron stated that the Democratic party chose to put together an all-white statewide party, in spite of the fact that New York's population is multiracial. Barron vowed that he would begin to organize a protest bid for governor for the state of New York. Freedom party officials stated that the purpose of this new political party is to create a state-wide vehicle through which the average poor and working people can be organized into a powerful collective voice and have their issues addressed.

Some of the questions to be addressed will include the valid effectiveness of a third party, strategies for organizing state wide, honest efforts to develop coalitions among varying interest groups and fund raising tactics.

Candidates and officers appearing to speak and address concerns will be Charles Barron candidate for Governor and candidate for Lt. Governor, Attorney Eva M. Doyle and Co-Chair of the New York State Freedom Party, educator Jitu Weusi.

This event will take place at the Afrikan Poetry Theatre (APT) from 3pm to 6pm. APT is located at 176-03 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, New York 11432.

The Future Announces The Official Launch of the New Website – www.TheFutureForward.net

New York, NY — August 31, 2009 — The Future, the nation’s latest media outlet and network for the black LGBT community, today announced plans to officially launch their new website on Tuesday, September 1st .

The decision to make TheFutureForward.net available on the world wide web was made by The Future’s President, Nathan Seven Scott and Vice-President, Cornelius Jones Jr., after receiving numerous requests during the past few years of the lack of media communication and connection in the black LGBT community. “We wanted to create a space were people could express themselves while voicing their opinions. The Future’s team have done a lot of soul-searching to make sure this was the right decision,” says Nathan Seven Scott, President of The Future. “We recognize the risk we are taking with this leap but have faith that it is the best decision for us, as well as adding another voice for the community as a whole. Currently, there are not many network titles available on a national or international level and we believe strongly that The Future will be filling a much-needed niche.”

Originally established as an events company for nightlife party goers in New York City in March 2009, The Future expanded its position and created a network which included the social media networks they were already apart of to include all major global cities. “Word spread quickly about our network” says Cornelius Jones Jr., Vice President of The Future, “and we found ourselves growing at a very rapid pace to accommodate special events like; Why Am I Single to Greet the Press and filming The Future TV, We Are The Media. We started promoting our original context weekly like ; Dishin’ with Dwight, The MEGA World of Lil Mogul, Arts, Advocacy + Wellness with Cornelius Jones Jr. and Notes from Nathan with a successful following.”

In preparation for its national network launch, The Future have formed alliances with media partners from all around the global to give us a clear view of the world with a COLORFUL eye. Contributors by: Giovanni Centurione, Nathan James, Tweet This with Drama Dupree, Hayward Aaron, BoysandClothes.com, BlackGayGossip.com, International News from Karanja Gacuca & Antoine B. Craigwell of GBMNews.com, Made in Brazil and JC Report, Special Features by Lonnell Williams; In Our Ear with Doo Dirty Show, Better Days Radio and The Pride Cast ; destination finders VIPListers.com and ZenBiz Travel and special editorial photo journalist Dexstar G | The Peoples Photographer. “As individuals, we both have a lot of personal integrity and wanted to make our network’s national debut with real credibility,” says Jones. “Whatever our circulation and viewership are, we want our advertisers to know that we have been honest from the start.”

The Future will debut online, as well as begins the season of original programming scene on The Future TV. The Future will market itself and make several appearances at select PRIDE festivals and special events in 2010 to promote the network and build its viewership base throughout the world.

About The Future

The Jena 6 Are Free -- How We Made It Possible

Dear Rod,

Yesterday (Friday, June 26th, 2009), nearly two years after more than 320,000 of you stood up to protect them from Jim Crow justice, the Jena 6--Jesse Ray Beard, Carwin Jones, Robert Bailey, Theo Shaw, Bryant Purvis and Mychal Bell--are all now free to move ahead with their lives. We should all be proud.

The five remaining Jena 6 cases were brought to conclusion on Friday1 when Jesse Ray, Carwin, Robert, Theo, and Bryant pleaded "no contest" to misdemeanor simple battery charges.2 They will spend no time in jail, serve seven days of probation, and pay relatively minor fines and court fees.

It's an incredible outcome given that the young men were originally charged with attempted murder in small-town Louisiana and had neither the funds nor the connections to get high-quality representation or attention for their cases.

Luckily for the Jena 6, hundreds of thousands of you got involved, and the power of your participation changed the game. An amazing team of lawyers worked tirelessly to achieve Friday's outcome. Our staff helped recruit them, and your financial contributions--over $275,000--provided the bulk of the funds for their work. Jim Boren, the coordinating attorney, said this about ColorOfChange members' contribution: "None of this would have happened without you."

But it wasn't just lawyers and money. Over 300,000 of you wrote to Governor Blanco and District Attorney Reed Walters. On September 20th, 2007, more than 10,000 of you went to Jena. Members who couldn't make it to Jena held more than 150 rallies and vigils across the country, and made more than 6,000 phone calls to elected officials in Louisiana. And a few weeks later, ColorOfChange members sent almost 4,000 complaints demanding an inquiry into the DA's actions.

Your actions offline and online helped put Jena on the map and resulted in critical coverage in every mainstream news outlet. You started a movement that made it impossible for Louisiana officials to support the status quo.

Today we offer congratulations to these young men and their families, and we say thank you to the entire ColorOfChange.org community. We're also so thankful to the attorneys who took these cases but chose to stay out of the limelight. They and several others3 are the unsung heroes of this story.

As the young men of the Jena 6 close this chapter of their lives, we wanted to give you an opportunity to wish them well. Click the link below to leave a personal statement for the young men of the Jena 6, or to listen to the voicemail from Jim Boren thanking the ColorOfChange community for our work:

http://www.colorofchange.org/jenaresolution/?id=2316-147103

While this is a great moment, it's important to remember that if it were not for the extreme nature of this case, most of us wouldn't have known about it or gotten involved. The reality is that there are countless Jena 6's: young people--often Black and male--who are overcharged or unduly criminalized, and whose plight is unknown to most of the outside world.

It's the reason our work cannot just be about identifying and fighting for individuals railroaded by the system, but about creating systemic change in criminal justice in America. We are truly grateful to have the chance to do this work with you, and we're hoping for your continued engagement and support.

Thanks and Peace,

-- James, Gabriel, William, Dani and the rest of the ColorOfChange.org team

3. Thanks are due to Alan Bean, Tory Pegram, and King Downing, who dedicated months to working with the families and getting the story out, and to our friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center who played a central role in putting together and supporting the legal teams. Without any one of them, our work would have been hampered, or in some cases not possible at all.

“Pride in The City”

Brooklyn, New York; June 24, 2009 - “Pride in the City”, a celebration for the lives and culture of Black lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, and game gender loving individuals, will occur August 7 – 9, 2009. After a series of meetings with community members and stakeholders, National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities (NAESM) is proud to announce that plans are underway for the iconic celebration attended by thousands from across the United States and abroad. NAESM has taken on the task of ensuring that Pride in the City occurs this year.

The mission of NAESM is to educate communities of color on the facts about HIV/AIDS [education/prevention] and to make healthcare and social services available to people of color with early or advanced stages of HIV/AIDS regardless of their sexual orientation. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, NAESM has provided HIV/AIDS services to black gay men for over nineteen years and continues to expand its services on a national scope.

The host hotel for Pride in the City is the Holiday Inn Express located at 279 Butler Street in (downtown) Brooklyn, NY (near the Atlantic Mall). Please call [718] 855-9600 and mention ""NAESM" for your special guest room rate of $139.00 per night.

Be on the lookout for more information later this week regarding partners, vending and sponsorship opportunities, and more information on the website, www.naesm.org. Additionally, we would like all community members to consider this as a formal invitation to get involved with Pride in the City!

As “Pride In The City” was cancelled in 2008, it was a loss for New Yorkers and Pride celebrants nationally. Although funding, which existed in past years, is no longer available, NAESM is committed to working with OUR community to create an enjoyable and memorable weekend. Come experience a refreshingly NEW and exciting Pride in the City celebration!
