QUOTATIONS OF "BLACK"

"Whenever I use BLACK it relates to some history of Africans in that particular place. It’s the idea of the color BLACK as a metaphor, or as a representation of African-Americans. It’s the notion of BLACK- BLACKNESS - and all its other meanings in relation to the history of race..."

- Fred Wilson

"Most of my fortitude to continue doing the work comes from the moral outrage I feel about the injustices that Black people endure disproportionately daily."

- N. Abdul-Wakil

"In the end, what matters is not skin shade but pan-African consciousness. Loving your complexion, your nose, lips, hair length and texture, no matter what the politics or trends decide, and simply be. That's the problem with us (African folks). We're still learning how to love ourselves. So used to glorifying others and putting others first..."

(January 21, 2010, New York, NY) - Universal Motown Records multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter-actress ERYKAH BADU announced via Twitter that she will release her fifth studio album, New Amerykah, Part II: Return of the Ankh, on March 30, 2010. The new album is the singer's hotly anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2008 disc, New Amerykah, Part I: 4th World War.

In contrast to New Amerykah, Part I: 4th World War, which was digitally produced and political in tone, New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh features lush live instrumentation and taps into Badu's emotional side by thematically focusing on romance and relationships. "With Part I, I was standing at an apex, looking at what was going on around me politically, socially, and economically," Badu explained. "With Part II, I'm hovering over me, looking at what's going on inside of me."

New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh features contributions from some of the most talented, groundbreaking, underground producers and engineers in the hip-hop game, including Grammy winners 9th Wonder and James Poyser, eclectic soul singer Bilal, and the late J Dilla. "We used a lot of analog instruments-harps, strings, drums, piano, and even a Theremin-to give the album that sonic feel," said Badu. "There's a strong undercurrent of bottom, a rumbling to these songs that feels good to me. It feels like a hug."

The press is already raving about New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, one of the most anticipated albums of 2010. The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog calls it "a throwback to her 1997 debut, ‘Baduizm,' with a more acoustic feel" while Vibe.com says, "Badu delivers an album that offers the emotional highs, lows and maddening complexities of being involved in a romantic relationship." Additionally, Okayplayer.com writes, "The album is dope," and Suite903.com declares, "The new album is beyond amazing."

ERYKAH BADU, a Dallas native, emerged in 1997 with her masterpiece debut album, Baduizm, as a primal force of nature connecting old school soul with contemporary R&B. The album garnered her numerous award nominations, including two Grammys (Best Female R&B Vocal, Best R&B Album) and multiple top spots on critics' Best-Of-The-Year Lists. In 2000, she followed up with the critically acclaimed platinum-selling album, Mama's Gun. In 2003, the EP World Wide Underground was awarded Gold certification.

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS
Coney Island Boardwalk Summer Music Series
South Brookyn, New York City

Hey Black Family,

I typically DON'T promote PARTIES and club & bar scene stuff as I feel there are soooooooo many folks out there promoting and cross-promoting these things. And quite frankly, a lot of these party events are economically incentive driven and... I'm NOT getting PAID to promote da shit!!

I do what I do out of passion and LOVE, and seeing my MOM lead the civil rights crusade by example; it's quite humbling when your Mom asks you (a 14 year old kid) to assist her at the Mandala Center (in Harlem back in the day, 1980s) to help feed the homeless; and because there's not enough socio-political news and pro-action happening in regard to the African Diaspora; and certainly not enough critical analysis/thinking out there of our circumstances. Plus the little guy is constantly getting his neck and head stepped on on a daily basis and doesn't get SELECTED to make the major news... because Black lives don't matter in some people's minds!!

Anyway, I will say that I went out to the Coney Island Boardwalk Summer Music Series last year for the first time and had a great time. There was truly great house music, it didn't cost anything, and it was especially warming to me because it is in my 'hood of Coney Island, south Brooklyn where I have grown up all my life. If you check out my Nubian Knights Network YahooGroup with all the stuff I have published over the years since 2002, you'll see that I'm making a truly rare exception here. LOL!

Anyway, come down to my neighborhood and have some FUN!

VERVE! Pride Slam 2009

Hey Y'all, I didn't do too much photography shooting, but I have a hand full of pics from VERVE! Pride Slam 2009. The event was really spectacular and held at it's regular and beautiful space called Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture located at 53 Prospect Park West in BK (Brooklyn)!! BK, y'all! U betta recognize! LOL! The VERVE! series (this was number 5!!) that started late last year, is an event series that is filling a niche that is missing within the Black same gender loving community; a sophisticated, almost cabaret style of musicianship created by us and for us!

Trust me, if you're tired of the same ol' club and bar scene and wanna head out for a night of entertainment by yourself, with a date or maybe a crew of friends with a powerful session of grassroot artists along with a pre and post-receptions (yeah, there's food, too! LOL!) with a social networkings and "man musings" (LOL!) component then VERVE! is da spot. It really is original and it's produced by The Well Entertainment Group which is spearheaded by Mr. Joseph Tolton and Germono Toussaint. A serious shout out to these two bruthaz and the rest of the staff for really putting on a spectacular show. Das wassup!

Here's the pics! Enjoy...
