QUOTATIONS OF "BLACK"
"Whenever I use BLACK it relates to some history of Africans in that particular place. It’s the idea of the color BLACK as a metaphor, or as a representation of African-Americans. It’s the notion of BLACK- BLACKNESS - and all its other meanings in relation to the history of race..."
- Fred Wilson
"Most of my fortitude to continue doing the work comes from the moral outrage I feel about the injustices that Black people endure disproportionately daily."
- N. Abdul-Wakil
"In the end, what matters is not skin shade but pan-African consciousness. Loving your complexion, your nose, lips, hair length and texture, no matter what the politics or trends decide, and simply be. That's the problem with us (African folks). We're still learning how to love ourselves. So used to glorifying others and putting others first..."

Its amazing to me that you posted this exhibition @ 1207 PM, cause, I was still viewing the photos at that time & I just now finished and thought I would email the link on Flickr to you but somehow someone beat me to it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing exhbition and brotha man (Trent Kelly) needs a very public exhibition space for it. How fitting it should be presented today-Valentine's Day.
I do have some issues with some of the photos as they are a bit ambiguous & therefore misleading in their interpretation. However, the exhibitor says that its the captions on the back of the photos that tell the story.
Not only do the photos run the full spectrum of our skin tones but of our collective socio-economic strata as well; cowboys, thugs, working class & blue collar bruthas, college boys, frat boys & professional brothas.
I had already known of the JUGGS group & knew about Stepin Fetchit from a relative who was in domestic service in his home but I had no idea about the two Boston bruthas from the Revolutionary War period!
An excellent piece of work that needs a public and traveling exhibition space. Not all of us have access to the digital media (i.e. our senior bruthas) Anyway, this was excellent, glad I called-in sick today.
PS: Did you bruthas know that Harlem historian & preservationist; Michael-Henry Adams is in the process of writing a book on SGL Harlem and its historical roots? Should be a good read!
Hey Greg,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thorough thoughts my brutha!
Yes, I believe some of the photos are ambiguous & therefore misleading in their interpretation as well, but the point was to exhibit cultural affirmation for Black same gender loving folks which is why I posted these pics from the brutha'z photo album on Flickr!!
Yeah, Michael Henry Adams has done the Homo Harlem film festival 2 years in a row. I look forward to whatever he publishes. It'll be FUN and interesting to see what he comes out with.
Again, THANKS for your comments Greg!! :-)
Beautiful post Rod... Same Gender Love is always beautiful, thank you for the inclusion:)
